#sol19 March 3 Reading Palate Cleansing

My current reading selection.

My husband heard me laughing out loud at what I was reading and looked up with surprise. Lately, he’s more likely to catch me crying at what I’ve read. I have been working my way through the Forest of Reading White Pine nominee list and a variety of #ownvoices texts to diversify my reading. My reading experiences have been much wider, but these materials aren’t easy to read. In the past few months I have read about human trafficking, abuse of all sorts, generational trauma, and PTSD amongst other things.

My most recent reading selection was Girls Burn Brighter by Shobha Rao. This slice isn’t meant to be a review, but the book was beautifully written.  I have since recommended it to a colleague. When I suggested it to her, though, it was with the caveat that it’s not a light read. Just when it seemed like the characters couldn’t sink any lower, society found a way to additionally exploit them.

So when it came time to return to my “To Be Read” pile I was clamouring for something lighter. The book jacket promises murder, mystery, and thievery; just what I need to cleanse my palate before I jump back into the murky waters of angsty YA.

  1. I have The Clockmaker’s Daughter on my shelf, waiting for me to read it. I am currently teaching a middle school unit on dystopian lit (classics from the 50s, followed by current YA) and will definitely need something a bit on the lighter side in a couple of weeks. I’m glad to hear it is a good one.

  2. Ooh! I love books that make me laugh! I think I’ll have to put The Clockmaker’s Daughter on my “To Read” list. Your first line was such a good hook for pulling me in, wanting to know more about your reading!
